Cable - Sterling/US Dollar exchange rate is been referred by this name by the Trader jargon. It is termed this because in the mid 1800’s, the rate was originally transmitted through a transatlantic cable.
Canadian Ivey Purchasing Managers (CIPM) Index - A monthly measure of the Canadian Business sentiment. It is issued by Richard Ivey Business School.
Candlestick Chart - A chart that gives information about the trading range for a day along with the opening and the closing price. The rectangle in the chart is shaded if the opening price is higher than the closing price. Otherwise, the rectangle is not shaded.
Carry (interest - rate carry) - The income or cost that is associated with an overnight keeping of a foreign position. This is a consequent of different interest rates of the currency pairs for the same period of time.
Carry Trade - Refers to the selling of a currency with low interest rate and at the same time, purchase of currencies with higher interest rates.
Cash market - It is a type of market in the actual financial instrument upon which a futures and options contract is based.
Central bank - A government or a quasi - governmental organization that carries the task of management of the monetary policies of the country. For example, Federal Reserve is the US central bank.
Chartist - The person who find trends and predict future movements by using the details of charts, graphs and historical data. He/she is also referred to as a Technical Trader.
Cleared funds - Funds that are sent to settle a trade and are freely available.
Clearing - This is the process of settling a particular trade.
Closed Position - Introductions in foreign currencies that have ceased to exist. In order to close a position, a certain amount of currency is bought or sold in order to offset an equal amount of the open position. The process will ‘square’ the position.
Collateral - Something that is given in order to secure a loan or as a guarantee of performance is termed as collateral.
Commission - A transaction fee that is charged by the broker is known as commission.
Confirmation - A document that is exchanged by the counterparts of a transaction that clearly states the terms of the made transaction.
Construction Spending - This is the measure of the amount that is to be spent in a new construction. The US Department of Commerce’s Census Bureau releases this on a monthly basis.
Contagion - This is the tendency of spreading of an economic crisis from one market to another.
Contract - The standard unit of trading is known as contract.
Counter Currency - The currency that is listed second in the currency pair.
Counterparty - This is one of the financial transaction’s participants.
Country Risk - The risk that is generally associated with a cross border transaction.
Cover - To take a forward foreign exchange transaction out or to close a short position by purchasing sold currency or securities.
Cross Currency Pairs - Any currency pair that does not include the US dollar is termed as cross currency pair. For example, EUR/CHF is a cross currency pair.
Currency - Money of any form, issued by the government or the central bank and that is used as legal tender and as a basis for trade is known as currency.
Currency pair - Two currencies that make up the foreign exchange rate are known as currency pair. For example; EUR/AUD.
Currency Risk - The chance of an unfavorable change in the currency rates.
Currency Symbols - AUD - Australian Dollar; CAD - Canadian dollar; EUR - Euro; JPY - Japanese Yen; GBP - British Pound; CHF - Swiss Franc.
Current Account - The sum of the balance of a trade combined with the net factor income and the net transfer payments, are known as current account.
