In the case of Donna Young, culture shock was the driving force behind it. She had grown up in Andros Islands in the Bahamas, a sparsely populated area, with her ten siblings and there dreamed of pursuing her very own professional career. After marrying architect Larry Young and then later on moving to the town of Epping in New Hampshire last 2003, she ended up struggling to fit in and adjust to the taciturn ways of her new home. She shares that she was the sole black woman in her work place, and most of the time she felt that she did not really belong. Such a feeling prompted her to drive herself further and become the best in everything that she did. Donna Young actually comes from a family geared towards entrepreneurship endeavors. A convenience store was run by her grandmother, and her father was the owner of two service stations back in Andros. When her father was killed in 1994 due to armed robbery, her mother took over the business and a brother of hers presided over a business involving scrap metal. Young had herself long wanted to take the plunge and establish her own small business, but did not do so right away since for a time she was a single mother. Moving to the United States gave her an opportunity to start her entrepreneurship ideas and spark the passion in it for herself.
All in the Family
Working with other people and family members in this business is also necessary. She goes around and shops for items in stores such as T.J. Maxx and Macys. After packing everything in suitcases, she ends up transporting the items through different means until it is finally picked up by her sister in Abaco. Young says that she thinks of her work as like that of a shipping agent. Mr. Young is known to marvel at his wife’s sales skills – an important attribute for anyone wanting to become an entrepreneur. When Donna Young is looking over the Abaco store, it is evident that her interaction with other women results in them walking out with purchases worth over several hundred dollars – purchases which they might never thought to have made anywhere else. At the moment, the boutique makes around two thousand five hundred dollars each week and is seen by the couple as highly profitable, with only one misstep being the initial decision to sell to women who are on the slim side.
