Hardest Hit in Japan: Small Exporters

A lot of people who own automobiles like the Prius, gaming system Nintendo Wii and mobile phone iPhone might have not heard about Porite, but this small business located outside the vicinity of Tokyo is in charge of making the important parts of their gadgets’ vital organs. Even despite the ubiquity which the company churns out in millions of pieces each and every day, the orders have begun drying up sometime in September. At the moment, there are new shipments which are down by forty percent compared to last year because many consumers coming from the United States as well as other parts are now trying to limit their spending for their sophisticated electronics. Now that there is very little to do, the four hundred employees of the company are now spending most of their days cleaning and sweeping and may be on the verge of letting go a dozen or so workers more.

Fall of Exports in Japan

It was announced last Wednesday by the finance ministry that the exports coming from Japan, which is the second largest economy in the world, had fallen down by around forty nine percent last February in comparison to the previous year. It is also that the fifth consecutive month wherein the exports went down. Some shipments coming to the United States had also fallen down fifty eight percent. The trade surplus of Japan was also down by ninety one percent to around eighty two point four billion yen – or roughly eight hundred and forty million. While many Japanese brands that are renowned all over the world had been receiving a lot of good attention in the news, a majority of the problems which affect the exporters of Japan are not the companies like Toyota or Sony – two companies that can predict many losses this whole year – but rather small companies like Porite.

Getting a Bigger Piece of the Workers’ Pie

There was a shift which had ended up overlooking the inside of Japan, and these unknowns are actually accountable for around seventy five percent of the manufacturing output of Japan. They also employ around ninety percent of the total workers sector. And because such is part of the export slump, the economy of the nation became twelve point one percent smaller compared to the final three months of the year 2008 and then again one period earlier. This had placed Japan on the steepest decline ever since the Second World War. Porite is one example of a very important group which found its niche in coming up with advanced inputs – such as the tiny bearings and the micron-thin films – which also make the products of other Japanese companies tick even in the disproportionate hit made on the country in this downturn.
