MySpace going places

MySpace is now conquering into your space. Through this social network, users would soon be able to move their MySpace profile pages to sites across the Web, including Yahoo, eBay and Twitter.

"Today, MySpace no longer operates as an autonomous island on the Internet," company co-founder Chris DeWolfe said on a conference call. "Profiles can now be shared across all the sites our users visit."

This move keeps the trend of tearing down the digital walls that have separated on website from another. Tech companies are letting users access information previously found on one particular site and move it to any online destination.

With this MySpace became the first social network to say it would let users take the profiles created on its site elsewhere. The changes will take effect on the coming weeks, company executives said. Soon users will be able to move their profiles to a wider range of other sites.

"The walled-garden approach will not survive in the long run," MySpace Chief Operating Officer Amit Kapur says in an interview.

Mobility Key to Expansion

Internet companies hope that by opening their sites to outside developers will give a more engaging experience that will give users more things to do online and more reason to stick around. Instead of solely relying on internet innovation to have traffic growth, sites are now fueling interest by letting third parties build programs.

Facebook helped spread the business model by opening its site to third parties that helped accelerate traffic growth. Facebook’s monthly users increased to more than 200%.

Allowing users to bring MySpace to other sites is key to its expansion. To continue to grow, MySpace needs not only to expand to new markets, a major effort during the past several years, but also to reach people who are not traditional network users.
